About Bushehr

One of the southern provinces of Iran located in north of the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman is Port of Bushehr which is one of the main Persian ports and great centres in the Persian Gulf.
Bushehr is known as the main southern gate of plateau of Iran, was connection ring of east and west civilization of ancient world.
Cuneiform inscription of Shotrok Nokhondeh , old buildings and ancient brass materials express the importance and prosperity of the region during the second millennium B.C in Ilams Empire.
Lian was the previous name of Bushehr, which has been changed to Ryshehr in the time of Shapour I.
This city was one of the biggest scientific and literary centres. In the sixteen and seventeen centuries, Ryshehr was one of the important commercial centres in Portuguese maps.
Boushehr, the reminder of Reeshehr in the time of Nader Shah (1736–1747) became a military city by Abu-Sheikh Nasser Khan.
Bushehr was the main commercial port of the Persian Gulf and the Indian Ocean.
The currency of Iran was allowed to print in Bushehr.
The region was pioneer in printing press, airline, textile industries and engineering firms in the area .The people were among the first who became familiar with newspaper in Iran and the first high school with the name of Saadat after Dar al- Funoon was established in this city. Bushehr is hot and humid all year and pleasant time to visit is between November to March.


Description of Bushehr Music& Dance:

Bushehr is a connection ring of culture and civilizations from many years before .Seafaring was the most common jobs in Bushehr , so people became familiar with different cultures of the world. The culture of this area is affected by the emigration of Africans and Arabs so base of music of Bushehr is an amalgam of folk music of Africa, India, Arab, Iran and roots of cultures of Iranian ethnics such as Turkish , Gypsies and Lori are apparent.

Rhythm and Melody in this music is somehow unique as well as new style, which is performed with special emotions and has similarities to African Melodies.

It is obvious that music of each nation is incomparable in kind, because music of each nation is proportionate with behaviour, environment and way of living of each nation and country.

Musical Instruments which are used:

1. Ney-Anban( Bag pipe): This instrument consist of a bag and a handle with two pipes and its versions can be found in India, Africa and Europe.

2. Dammam( a kind of Drum) : This instrument is a special version of percussion instrument which could be found in India and Africa.

3. Senj (Cymbals): is a percussion instrument consist o two circular metal plates. Thickness of each plate is about 20 cm.

4. Teempo/Zarb-o Teempo: a cup-like percussion instrument which is held upright between legs and played by hands and is used in Africa, Arabic and even Turkish countries. Usually Teempo makes a combination with another instrument with a name of Zarb .These make a new instrument called Zarb-o Teempo.

5. Deyre& Deyreh Zangi(Tambourine): This instrument is used in the most countries and the original one or the similar ones are used with another name like " Daf-Darieh".

6. Bugh (Horn): This instrument is made of a horn of African Kudu antelope which is decorated in a unique way and it is used with the Dammam & Senj in a ceremony with the same name.

7. Ney- Jofti: This instrument is another melodic instrument which is like the handle of Ney –Anban but it has a separate emotion than Ney Anban. This instrument is producing sound with a special blowing technique in it and it should be played without interruption. The version could be found in ancient areas from Europe to Africa and Asia.

Different forms of performances:

-Senj& Dammam: An interesting form along dance and movement- harmony of Percussion Instruments rhythm.


-Bandari music and dance : One of the most famous and well known dance forms of south of Iran (Bushehr) is “Bandari Dance”. From many years ago this kind of dance has performed by women and men. However, in the past, Bushehri women had their traditional wedding ceremonies too in which Bandari dance and music had only performed by their own. In Music of Bushehr there is also a special form called Bandari.


-Dance of Mouloudi / Char- Dastmaleh: An interesting piece and form along dance and melody in which players may dance during the performance.



Dance- Choupi Bushehri and Tarkeh bazi: a unique stick dance with Choupi Bushehri music. This stick dance is performed in some of the Iranian ethnics such as Bakhtiari and Qashqaees



-Yazleh:Dance and song along with several percussion instruments with harmonic clapping and fantastic rhythm and Choub bazi(stick dance ).



-Neymeh :Special ceremony of native sailors while accomplishing different work in native ships-dance and song with percussion instruments .


-Melodies& Songs consist of solo- Choir and various rhythm –fantastic harmony of melodies and percussion instruments


-Folk Songs different forms of songs such as: Beyt, Sharveh, Jangnameh along with tragic melodies, etc. solo by interchanging poems-without musical instruments.
